If it's always at the 37 minute mark, then I'd bet it's some older default driver that XP that is screweing it up. You could try slipstreaming in SP3 and newer drivers. Aah, OK. Thanks for the clarification on OOBE. I've tried the OOBE a couple of times, to no avail. I'll try it again this evening, to see if it works.
And, yes, I've tried the process a couple of times. It always stops at the 37 minute mark. I can't log into Windows from the desktop.
I assume that I should burn the drivers from my second computer and try that? My laptop isn't a Dell, fwiw. I'll try burning a copy of the disc to see if that works. I've had this problem before. Its a problem processing the drivers during a repair install. This will tell you what device and. Copy the. You may have to do this more than once. When windows is installed, copy the inf files back and have it rescan for hardware changes.
I assumed the OP was formatting and doing a clean reinstall. IS that the case OP? Floppy drive needed, no? I ran Hirans boot cd, and reverted the Registry back to an earlier date. I was able to boot up fine and the issue I was having before was resolved as well. Thanks again! Try replacing the RAM. This happens to me on really old machines with RAM that is going out. Which was probably the cause for me wiping it to start with. Could be a number of things. Try replacing or re-seating the RAM as suggested above.
I'd also try an XP sp1 or 2 disk, just to make sure, you can always run the service pack update afterwards. If this fails then I'd say it's most likely a hard drive error. In addition to memory test, I would do a visual inspection of mother board looking for bulging capacitors. They can get really flaky with bad caps. Also, win XP will not handle a bad disk drive.
